Bobtail and Deadhead Insurance

If you run a trucking business or are an independent trucker, then you may already be familiar with the terms “bobtailing” and “deadheading.” They are both common situations for the truck driver to be in, particularly after they have arrived at their delivery destination. An understanding of these situations is essential, as is bobtail and deadhead insurance itself.

  • Bobtailing: This is the situation in which the driver is operating the vehicle without the trailer attached. Often, after the trailer of goods has been delivered, the driver must return home – often long-distance – driving only the tractor portion of the truck.
  • Deadheading: This refers to the situation where the driver is operating the vehicle with an empty trailer.

The Importance of Bobtail and Deadhead Insurance

Many liability insurance policies will only cover trucks with goods in transit. Additionally, many truckers operate under a contract as well as independently, which means they will also require their own bobtail and deadhead insurance.

An independent trucker may have a contract to deliver goods from A to B. While the goods are in transit, the company whose goods are being delivered will provide liability coverage for the driver. After the goods have been delivered, the driver has fulfilled his contractual obligations and is driving home independently. This means the company’s liability policy no longer covers the driver, leaving him or her open to liability claims should an accident or incident occur while driving home.

Bobtail and deadhead insurance offers liability coverage for drivers after they’ve delivered their goods. It fills the gap that many commercial auto policies leave and helps ensure that the driver isn’t exposed to risk.

Large Trucks Face More Liability

As a driver of a large vehicle, you are exposed to more liability. Conditions on roads and other drivers can cause you to have an accident. And smaller vehicles will usually fare worse in an accident. Whether it’s your fault or not, this leaves you open to liability claims.

In 2015, 4,050 large trucks were involved in fatal collisions. Speeding was the most common reason followed by driver distraction. Drivers on their phones are 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident.
