Boat Insurance and Watercraft Insurance

Liability Insurance for Boat Owners, Renters, and Businesses
Get Started

Being on the water can be unpredictable and if your boat accidentally causes damage, your business and your life could take a huge hit. Whether you own a boat business or simply have your own personal watercraft, proper coverage is necessary.

While some states do not require boat owners to carry boat or personal watercraft insurance, not having the coverage puts you at significant risk. If you cause an accident while on the water, an injured party could sue to cover their medical expenses and damage to their property. If the lawsuit is successful, you could owe hundreds of thousands of dollars or more. Having the right amount of liability insurance reduces your exposure and protects your assets.

Watercraft and Commercial Boat Insurance Coverage

General Liability

Covers 3rd party bodily injury and 3rd party property damage for both personal and commercial use of your boat or watercraft.

Hull and Physical Damage Coverage

This coverage can protect the boat owner or renter against damage to their own boat, including the hull, machinery, and other equipment. It typically covers losses caused by perils such as collisions, fire, theft, vandalism, and certain natural disasters.

Uninsured Boater Coverage

This coverage can protect boat owners, renters, and passengers in the event of an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured boater. It typically covers medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages that may result from the accident.

TRU Umbrella

Our TRU Umbrella Insurance solution can cover the gaps and exclusions in your primary policy. Traditional umbrella policies still have holes that leave you exposed. For true peace of mind, a TRU Umbrella solution is what you need.

Sudden or Accidental Pollution Coverage

This coverage can protect boat owners and renters against costs associated with sudden or accidental pollution incidents caused by their boat. It typically covers expenses related to containment and cleanup of pollutants, as well as liability for damages to the environment or third parties caused by the pollution event. This coverage can be particularly important for boat owners who use their vessels in sensitive marine environments.

Doesn't my homeowners policy cover my boat?

In some cases, a homeowners insurance policy will extend coverage to a boat — as long as the watercraft is relatively small. However, these policies typically provide minimal protection, include gaps that leave you vulnerable, and contain low liability limits that may not cover the full amount of a court-ordered award or settlement. Many boat owners turn to XINSURANCE for extra coverage that gives them true peace of mind.

Typically, a homeowners policy will cover boats under 50 hp and under 26 feet long, however, you should check your policy to confirm. XINSURANCE can also review your policy to see if your boat is covered and if there are any gaps or exclusions that are leaving you exposed. We can then provide solutions for your boat if additional coverage is desired or needed.

Do you provide “normal” boat insurance?

Yes! We provide boat insurance solutions for your personal or commercial boat that the standard market will not offer you.

Do you cover rentals and can I rent my units on a peer to peer platform?

Yes! We can cover businesses that rent boats and boats that are used on a P2P (peer-to-peer) app or platform. Your rented units can be used in lakes, oceans, rivers, etc.

We can offer a renters’ liability program which will cover physical damage to units while being rented and personal liability coverage for the renter. We can also offer transportation coverage while under renters’ care/control so they can pick up and transport a rented unit.

Does XINSURANCE offer a lay-up period during policy period?

Yes, we can underwrite and schedule a lay-up period on the policy.

Can I make payments or do I need to pay in full?

Yes, we offer payment plans: down payment of 25%, 30%, or 40% down, then monthly payments will coincide with the length of your season.

Can I add more units during policy period?

Yes, we encourage growth. Keep in mind, that all units must be scheduled to the policy for coverage to apply.

Can I cancel after my season is over?

Yes, but there will be no return of premium, as the policy has been underwritten around the exposure during the season.

Do I Need Insurance When I Rent A Boat?

While boat renters’ insurance is not legally mandatory, it is highly recommended since the owner’s insurance coverage may not cover all potential liabilities. It protects the renter against potential financial liabilities and provides peace of mind during the boat rental. Always check what the boat owner’s insurance covers and consider getting additional coverage if necessary.
